JoKr Brewers Nacht & Nebel

Nacht & Nebel by JoKr Brewers, Dunkelweizen, 5.6% ABV, 15 IBU.

This is a rather unknown beer style to me, I’ve rated no more than three dunkelweizens at Ratebeer. But I guess I should expect a dark German style wheat beer, right?

The aroma is strong and has a good balance between yeast, spices and fruity overripe banana. On top of this, I suspect this is the dunkel part of the beer, I also get some nice caramel notes. A really inviting aroma!

The taste is light sweet with some bitter hints in the finish. The flavours are not as strong as the aroma made me hope for. There are some really nice banana notes in the finish, but initially and mid-palate the flavours are too weak. However, I do get nice notes of spices, yeast and lemon, the latter giving rise to (or maybe fools my palate to believe that there is) an acidic touch. There is also a disturbing chalky element in the back, this is not the kind of yeast I like in my wheat beers. And, I swear, by the holy mutha of Jeezus von Christ, that I get some stinging alcohol notes in this one as well! Now I’m starting to wonder if it’s the Bergen water that triggers my fusel alarm. These alcohol notes are really not that prominent, but still, a 5.6% ABV brew shouldn’t have such elements at all.

The carbonation is quite lively, and that fits the beer well. With such a light body and close to watery texture, a soft carbonation would have been strange…

Conclusion: very nice aroma but a bit too faint flavours. I won’t mention the alcohol.
