ClubGonzo’s First We Take Manhattan

First We Take Manhattan by ClubGonzo, Berliner Weisse, 3.8% ABV, 4 IBU.

First We Take Manhattan, batch no 58.

First We Take Manhattan, batch no 58.

Water? No, berlinerweisse!

I’ve never had a Berliner Weisse that I’ve really enjoyed, every single one I’ve tried so far have been plain boring. A noticeable exception was ClubGonzo’s S.C.O.B.Y. Doo, even though that was pretty far from a regular Berliner Weisse.

As expected the brew looks utterly uninteresting. It pours a clear golden body that is very, very pale, this one almost looks like water. The small, white, fizzy head disappears completely after a few seconds.

The aroma is pretty faint, but it’s actually quite pleasant. It’s crisp and refreshing, with notes of apple cider, apple cellar, lemon and traces of an interesting funky sourness.

The flavour is also rather faint, and I fail to pick up much else than what I got from the aroma.

It’s dry, fairly lively carbonated, and refreshing (in the same way as carbonated water with a drop of lemon juice is).

Conclusion: the vague funk sort of saves this brew.

  1. Well, I’ll chalk this one up to “Terje doesn’t really like Berliner Weisse at all”-account. Thought this one was pretty decent within its style. Not fantastic, but definitely a whole point or so further up on the scale. Oh well, can’t catch’em all like Pokemon! 😉
