ClubGonzo’s Fool’s Gold

Fool’s Gold by ClubGonzo, Mead/Melomel, 15% ABV.

ClubGonzo's Fool's Gold, mead batch no. 12.

ClubGonzo’s Fool’s Gold, mead batch no. 12. Hiv og hoi.

The cloudberries ensured that is the most expensive mead that ClubGonzo has brewed, let’s see if it’s the best!

The colour of this mead is actually quite golden, just look at the picture below. #nofilter, btw.

Rest assured, ClubGonzo, your expenses payed off, the aroma is strong and definitely dominated by massive amounts of cloudberries. This isn’t exactly my favourite berry, but this mead smells as good as any cloudberry will ever smell. The honey mixes in well.

Fool's Gold, and golden it is.

The flavour is strong and packed with gooseberries, and of course honey. The 15% ABV is very noticeable, a bit too noticeable for my taste. It’s quite warming and the alcohol has a vodka-like drying effect on the palate. It’s a sweet brew, but not cloying.

Conclusion: if you like cloudberries, this mead is for you. It’s a bit too alcoholic, but as a slow sipper it sort of works.

  1. I guess the alcohol-burst kinda puts down your rating a bit, but last time I had this (only one bottle left now, so I can’t just go and test it) it was not too much for me and I was rather happy with the outcome. Next time (if I feel stupid/rich enough to do it again) it will be fermenting differently and hopefully a less strong and equally rich version will emerge. Extra cudos for the awesome pic setup Terje! 😀
