ClubGonzo’s Banana Split

Banana Split by ClubGonzo, Mead, 11.5% ABV.

Honey, vanilla beans, cocoa nibs and banana. Sounds good, right?

Banana Split, mead batch 10.

Banana Split, mead batch 10.

It pours a clear, still, medium golden body, just the way I like it.

The strong aroma is pretty special, and doesn’t smell that much like a banana split. I had expected massive notes of overripe banana, but the fruity notes are not that obvious to me. The cocoa is even more well hidden. There is also a strange vegetal thing in that I can’t quite pinpoint (it sort of reminds me of a rhubarb jam I once made, where I’ve added hop pellets that got dissolved in the jam).

It tastes a bit better than it smells, without being fantastic. Honey, banana and the same strange, vegetal, dull hop pellet trub notes as I found in the aroma. It has a very sweet taste, and the texture is thick and syrupy.

Conclusion: a bit strange and not that banana split-y, but almost drinkable.

ClubGonzo’s Potpourri Madness

Potpourri Madness by ClubGonzo, Mead, 12.7% ABV.

Potpourri madness indeed. Mead batch no. 09.

Potpourri madness indeed. Mead batch no. 09.

Another mead with lots of stuff added, this time it’s sage, lavender and rose water.

Nice golden colour.

Nice golden colour.

In the glass it has a beautiful deep golden colour.

The aroma is strong, extremely floral and very perfumed, in itself it’s a nice aroma, but it doesn’t actually smell like something that you’re supposed to drink. It smells more like something you put in a vase. I have never smelled rose water, so I can’t say if I pick up that, but there is certainly truckloads of lavender in this one.

The flavour is sharp, floral and dominated by lavender and it gives an overall perfumed impression. The alcohol is very obvious and quite stinging. The taste is less sweet than many ClubGonzo meads.

Conclusion: it smells nice, I mean, lavender smells nice, but for a drink it’s too perfumed and too focused on the flowers. It just feels a bit wrong to drink something this floral.

ClubGonzo’s Sticky Christmas

Sticky Christmas by ClubGonzo, Mead, 10.6% ABV.

ClubGonzo's Sticky Christmas, mead batch no 08.

ClubGonzo’s Sticky Christmas, mead batch no 08.

With less than three months to go before the holiday season kicks in, it’s about time to start with the christmas brews! This mead has it all: honey (d’oh!), raisins, cardamom seeds, allspice, cinnamon sticks, clove spikes and fresh ginger!

Sticky Christmas is a crystal clear golden one. The aroma is… well hey there, happy christmas! ClubGonzo has certainly obtained his goal, this smells like christmas! To make it short, it pretty much smells of all of the above ingredients, maybe except for the raisins.

The strong flavour is also a big christmas present, again see the list above for elements. The strongest flavour, apart from the honey of course, is the cardamom. The taste is sugary christmassy sweet and lovely, without being overly sweet. And where is the 10.6% of alcohol? A reinheitsgebot mead geek might claim that this taste more like a sweet spiced liqueur than a mead, but so what? It’s a lovely brew nevertheless!

Conclusion: happy christmas!
