Dr. M. nr 5 – Niña

Niña by Dr. M, India Pale Ale, 6.3% ABV, 162 IBU.

As always Dr. M is on the dark side of the colour scale when brewing, this IPA pours a medium brown, cloudy and somewhat dirty-looking body. The head is of average size, it’s light-brown and it settles as a fully lasting layer. A decent amount of foam is left on the glass.

A brown IPA.

Enjoyed in the garden 6 months after bottling

The aroma is quite strong, sweet and mostly fruity, but some roasted notes are also very present. This actually smells more like a black IPA than a traditional IPA, which the label claims that this is. It’s a fairly simple aroma with slightly overripe tropical fruits and lightly roasted coffee.

The taste is moderate sweet and moderate bitter. According to the label this beer clocks in at 162 IBU, I would have guessed 50 to 60… The moderate flavours are again a mix of hoppy and roasted notes. Cold filter coffee, caramel and fruits, also some light unclean yeasty notes. It feels like the malt and the hops try to beat each other to death, there is little cooperation between the two poles, and hence they partially annihilate each other. Not that this is a very boring and tasteless beer, but in a really successful india brown ale, which I guess is the most fitting style for the Niña, the malt and the hops should enhance each other, not dull each other down.

Despite the rather high carbonation this beer feels rather smooth on the palate. The body is medium and the finish is light dry.

Conclusion: if you put aside the untraditional interpretation of the IPA style, this sort of works for me. It’s not a bad brew by any means, just a bit anonymous. And slightly boring?
